Dischem Ride For Sight
Reynard Butler won the featured 116km Ride for Sight road race in Boksburg today.
The ProTouch rider completed the race in 2:39:54, beating BCX’s Nolan Hoffman and Randwater-Transnet’s Shameeg Salie into second and third respectively.
The majority of the field stayed together for the first 50km of the race, before the bunch started breaking up and 30 riders went ahead 60km in.
The leading bunch whittled down to five when BCX’s David Maree and Brandon Downes, Cycling Box’s Nico Thiart, Casper Kruger and Luthando Kaka made a break 75km in.
Maree, Downes and Kaka then surged ahead at the 88km mark and created a 41-second gap. Their lead dropped down to 30 seconds with 20km left.
Heading towards the last 5km stretch, Maree and Downes went ahead, but their lead reduced again to 24 seconds.
The chasing bunch, with a couple of kilometres to go, swallowed them in before Butler won the final dash to the line.
